What is VoIP?

Your telephone call traverses the internet as digitised "packets" of data (all encrypted for the sake of privacy and security), along with the rest of the web traffic -web pages, emails and downloadeds - until it reaches a special gateway (ITSP, Internet Telephony Service Provider) close to the call's ultimate destination. Here the signal is translated from digital bits and bytes back into the sound of your voice, fed into the local phone network and directed to the number you are calling.

Instead of two separate networks, one each for data and voice, only one network is needed if voice is packetized (Voice over IP) and sent over the data network.

What are the Advantages of VoIP?

Compared to conventional Telephony
  • saves on line rental as only one adsl connection is required over one telephone line (this can support up to 4 conversations per 64k bandwidth),
  • Calls between Voip Phones are free, regardless of your physical location. (local, interstate or even overseas)
  • Carries a real phone number that you can make and receive calls.
  • Fully portable; you can keep the same BroadBand Phone handset and phone number if you move or travel. (locally, interstate or overseas)
  • Great local untimed, STD and IDD call rates.
  • You can have multiple VoIP Phones tied to one ADSL or cable connection, and can add more telephone lines for making and receving calls.
  • You can have multiple phone numbers (e.g. one Sydney number, and one Melbourne number) tied to one BroadBand Phone, creating virtual offices for your families and customers to contact you at a local call cost.
  • supports services such as voicemail, call forwarding etc.
  • is more flexible,
  • is more scalable
